Two Bureau of Prison Employees Entered Guilty Pleas to Bribery Charges

Clarksburg, West Virginia — February 25, 2009 — Two Bureau of Prisons employees entered guilty pleas on February 20 and 24, 2009, in United States District Court in Clarksburg before Magistrate Judge John S. Kaull.

United States Attorney Sharon L. Potter and Gene E. Morrison, Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Department of Justice, Office of the Inspector General, Washington Field Office, announced that:

WILLIAM E. BRANTNER, age 24, of Friendsville, Maryland, entered a plea of guilty to one count of an Information charging him with bribery. Brantner, who was a correctional officer employed by the United States Bureau of Prisons, received money from and inmate at USP Hazelton in return for heroin, marijuana, tobacco, and a cellular telephone in March 2008.

CAROL JARVIS, age 41, of Normantown, West Virginia, entered a plea of guilty to one count of an Information charging her with bribery. Jarvis, who was a teacher employed by the United States Bureau of Prisons, received money from an inmate at FCI Gilmer in return for tobacco in November 2005.

BRANTNER and JARVIS both face a maximum penalty of 15 years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000.

The cases were prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David E. Godwin and were investigated by the Office of the Inspector General, Washington Field Office.
