ATTORNEY GENERAL ASHCROFT RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL

WASHINGTON, D.C.-- Attorney General John Ashcroft was discharged from the George Washington University Hospital shortly after noon today, March 14, 2004.

Attorney General Ashcroft entered G.W. Hospital on March 4, 2004 with a severe case of Gallstone Pancreatitis. On March 9, 2004, Attorney General Ashcroft underwent surgery to remove his gallbladder which contained several gallstones that were of concern to the doctors. Doctors performed this procedure to better prevent the recurrence of Pancreatitis, which can be a life-threatening illness with many complications.

Deputy Attorney General James Comey will continue to run the Department while Attorney General Ashcroft recuperates.

“The Attorney General and Mrs. Ashcroft thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the George Washington University Hospital for their excellent treatment and care,” said Director of Public Affairs Mark Corallo. “The Ashcrofts are grateful for the many friends and well wishers who kept them in their thoughts and prayers during this illness. They would also like to thank people for respecting the Attorney General’s need for quiet rest as he continues to recover.”
