DIRECTOR OF FEDERAL VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN OFFICE TO VISIT
KENTUCKY

Bonnie Campbell to Visit as Congress Ponders Cuts in
                    Violence Against Women Act

Washington, DC -- Bonnie Campbell, recently appointed Director
of the Justice Department's Violence Against Women Office, will be
in Louisville and Frankfort, Kentucky Tuesday, April 25 to tour a
shelter for victims of domestic violence and learn about the
state's efforts to prevent and combat such crimes.

The Violence Against Women Act, which was passed as part of
the crime bill signed by President Clinton last fall, is now
threatened as Congress considers a proposal to cut funding by $5
billion, which could eliminate resources needed to implement it.

The Violence Against Women Office, headed by Ms. Campbell,
coordinates the Justice Department's efforts to combine new federal
criminal laws with assistance to states and localities to fight
domestic violence.
