United States Attorney's Office For The Southern District Of Illinois Mission Statement

The United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois is the chief federal law enforcement officer of the United States within the 38 southern counties of Illinois. He was appointed, with the advice and consent of the United States Senate, by the President of the United States, and serves at his discretion.

It is the mission of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois to fulfill three statutory responsibilities under Title 28, Section 547 of the United States Code:

  • prosecution of criminal cases brought by the Federal Government;
  • prosecution and defense of civil cases in which the United States is a party; and
  • collection of debts owed the Federal Government which are administratively uncollectible.

The United States Attorneys serve as the principal federal prosecuting and litigating office for cases arising in 38 counties in Southern Illinois, an area with a population of approximately 1.2 million people. The Office is headquartered in Fairview Heights and also has branch offices in Benton and East St. Louis.
