KAREN L. LOEFFLER CONFIRMED U.S. ATTORNEY FOR THE DISTRICT OF ALASKA
Long time federal prosecutor and currently serving Interim U.S. Attorney for
the District of Alaska was sworn by Chief United States District Court Judge Ralph R. Beistline today as the United States Attorney for the District of Alaska. Ms. Loeffler was confirmed by the United States Senate yesterday. Her commission was signed by President Barack Obama this morning. A formal installation ceremony will be scheduled in the near future. Ms. Loeffler is the first female to serve as United States Attorney for the District of Alaska.
“I am excited and honored to take on this important responsibility. I am very proud of the work done by the attorneys and staff of this office who labor tirelessly each day to represent the United States in criminal and civil cases with the highest level of professionalism, and I will work hard to lead them and the District of Alaska in the tasks before us.”
Ms. Loeffler was admitted the bar in Alaska in 1985 and served as an Assistant Attorney General and an Assistant District Attorney for the State of Alaska before joining the United States Attorneys office as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in 1989. During her 20 year career as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Ms. Loeffler has prosecuted a wide variety of cases including narcotics trafficking, robbery, wildlife offenses, identity theft and other matters. She has specialized, however, in complex white collar fraud, beginning her career as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in the prosecution of two individuals for bribery and kickback scandal involving the North Slope of Alaska. She also successfully prosecuted a number of individuals for bank and mortgage fraud and, most recently, convicted former Fairbanks Mayor James C. Hayes of misuse of government funds, money laundering and tax fraud in 2008.
In addition to her professional career, Ms. Loeffler has served on the board of directors of the
Anchorage Ski Club and has been a past commissioner of the Anchorage Park Commission.
Ms. Loeffler received her undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from Dartmouth College in
1979, and graduated, with honors, from Harvard Law School in 1983.
