anchorage man indicted for drug dealing and held in custody

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 22, 2010

Anchorage, Alaska – United States Attorney Karen L. Loeffler announced today, December 22, 2010, that Martey Turail Greer was indicted by a federal grand jury in Anchorage on charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, distribution of a controlled substance, possession of firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking, and felon in possession of firearms. Greer was arraigned in Federal Court on December 15, 2010, and appeared at a detention hearing earlier today.

The four-count indictment named Greer, 29, as the sole defendant. Greer is being held in custody pending trial.

According to the indictment presented to the court, Greer possessed and distributed crack cocaine. Greer is alleged to have a prior felony conviction for drug trafficking from the State of Nevada and is charged with possessing a semi-automatic rifle and a semi-automatic pistol.

Special Assistant United States Attorney Erin E. White, who presented the case to the grand jury, indicated that the law provides for a maximum total sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of one million dollars, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Ms. Loeffler commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Anchorage Police Department for the investigation leading to the successful indictment in this case. SAUSA White is a prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office funded by the Municipality of Anchorage for the purpose of prosecuting gang-related and violent crime cases.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
