UNION SPRINGS DRUG DEALER SENTENCED TO 97 MONTHS IN FEDERAL PRISON
MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA— Senior United States District Judge W. Harold Albritton sentenced Aubrey Goodwin, age 34, of Union Springs to 97 months in federal prison with 4 years of supervised release for his December 17, 2007, conviction of federal drug distribution charges, announced Leura G. Canary, United States Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama. Goodwin remains in the custody of the United States Marshal’s Service pending placement by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Previously, Judge Albritton presided over Goodwin’s one day trial in which a jury in the Middle District found him guilty on both counts of a two-count indictment charging distribution of cocaine base, which is commonly referred to as “crack cocaine,” in violation of Title 21, United States Code, Section 841(a)(1). According to the indictment, Goodwin was charged with distributing 5 grams or more of a mixture and substance containing crack cocaine on two separate occasions. Count One of the indictment charged Goodwin with distribution of crack cocaine on May 21, 2003. Count Two of the indictment charged Goodwin with distribution of crack cocaine on June 11, 2003. According to the evidence presented at trial, Goodwin sold crack cocaine to a confidential informant working with the Drug Enforcement Administration on both occasions. After hearing the evidence presented at trial, the jury found Goodwin guilty of distributing 22.9 grams of crack cocaine on May 21, 2003, and 47.7 grams of crack cocaine on June 11, 2003.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Troy Police Department, and the Narcotics Division of the District Attorney’s Office for the Third Judicial Circuit of Alabama. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Louis V. Franklin, Jerusha T. Adams, and Christopher A. Snyder.
