FLORIDA MAN SENTENCED AFTER BEING FOUND
WITH 980 POUNDS OF MARIJUANA
BIRMINGHAM, AL - ANTHONY DARALIUS JONES, 38, of Del Ray Beach, Florida, was sentenced by United States District Judge C. Lynwood Smith, Jr. to 46 months in prison, and was given 4 years supervised release after the prison term is served. JONES was convicted on these charges on June 6, 2008. United States Attorney Alice H. Martin of the Northern District of Alabama and Greg Borland, Resident Agent in Charge, Drug Enforcement Administration, announce that JONES was sentenced on charges of possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute.
According to court documents, JONES was stopped on November 27, 2007, by an Alabama State Trooper for a traffic violation. Approximately 980 pounds of marijuana was found hidden in duffle bags in the trailer compartment of JONES’ 18-wheeler. JONES was arrested in a similar incident in May of 2004 by the Arizona Department of Public Safety yielding 581 pounds of marijuana. That case is still pending trial in the State Court of Coconino County, Arizona.
“Our highways are too frequently used as a way to transport hidden drugs across the country. I commend the Alabama State Trooper’s for protecting our roadways. We will continue to prosecute anyone caught transporting illegal substances through the State of Alabama,” said U.S. Attorney Alice H. Martin.
This case was investigated by Alabama Bureau of Investigations and the Drug Enforcement Administration and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Brad Felton on behalf of the United States.
