FLORENCE WOMAN PLEADS GUILTY TO FOURTEEN COUNTS OF FALSE CLAIMS
BIRMINGHAM, AL - CHARLOTTE THOMPSON-JONES, 38, of Florence, AL, plead guilty today to fourteen counts of a federal information on charges of false claims. Alice H. Martin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama and James D. Vickery, Special Agent in Charge, Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigations announce the plea agreement today.
THOMPSON-JONES, during the filing seasons pertaining to tax years 2003 through 2005, prepared and filed false tax returns on behalf of ten individuals. These tax returns were reported to the IRS as suspicious. The returns filed used false information on Forms W-2 and Schedule C’s. The individuals for whom the returns were filed were not aware false information had been provided to the IRS. THOMPSON-JONES also filed a false return in her name which generated a false claim for refund.
“Honest, hard-working citizens who dutifully pay their taxes every year are the ones who ultimately suffer because of those who choose to deceive the IRS,” stated United States Attorney Alice H. Martin.
THOMPSON-JONES could receive a maximum of 5 years in prison and a fine of up to 250,000. Sentencing is scheduled for, July 9, 2009 at 10:00 am, before United States District Judge Virginia E. Hopkins.
This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Internal Revenue Service and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Angela R. Debro, on behalf of the United States.
