BIRMINGHAM – A federal grand jury today indicted an Ohio man for the September robbery of a North Alabama bank, announced U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and FBI Special Agent in Charge Patrick J. Maley.

A three-count indictment filed today in U.S. District Court charges STEFAN CHADWICK CRAWMER, 42, of Columbus, Ohio, with bank robbery, use of a firearm during a violent crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Count One of the indictment charges CRAWMER with robbing the Wells Fargo Bank in Madison of $8,050 on Sept. 10. Count Two charges CRAWMER with using a Makarov 9mm semi-automatic handgun in the robbery, and Count Three charges that he was a convicted felon in possession of that firearm.

 “Armed bank robbers do more than take money that does not belong to them, they put innocent bystanders and bank employees in harm’s way and cause them to fear for their lives,” Vance said. “It is critical that these violent criminals be brought to justice. The suspect in this case fled but was apprehended almost immediately by Madison Police. The indictment in this case is the result of that quick police response and a collaborative investigation with the FBI,” Vance said.

The maximum prison sentence for bank robbery is 25 years. Use of the firearm during the robbery carries a mandatory minimum sentence of seven years, which must be served consecutively to any other sentence upon conviction. The felon in possession charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years. All charges are subject to maximum fines of $250,000.

Members of the public are reminded that the indictment contains only charges.  A defendant is presumed innocent of the charges and it will be the government’s burden to prove a defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
