Jackson County Man Indicted For Bridgeport Bank Robbery
BIRMINGHAM – A federal grand jury today indicted a Jackson County man for the Dec. 5 robbery of a Bridgeport bank, U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and FBI Special Agent in Charge Patrick J. Maley announced.
A one-count indictment filed in U.S. District Court charges MICHAEL WAYNE JOHNSON, 51, with robbing the First National Bank of about $2,656.
“This investigation and prosecution demonstrates just how swift and sure justice can be when federal and local law enforcement agencies work together,” Vance said. “It should send a strong message to others who think they can get away with committing violent crimes for personal gain.”
If convicted, Johnson could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and $250,000 fine.
The FBI, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bridgeport Police Department investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell E. Penfield is prosecuting the case.
Members of the public are reminded that the indictment contains only charges. A defendant is presumed innocent of the charges and it will be the government’s burden to prove a defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
