Tristram J. Coffin, U.S. Attorney for the District of VermontTristram J. Coffin was sworn in as the 36th U.S. Attorney for the District of Vermont in August 2009. He was a familiar face to many attorneys and professionl staff at the Vermont U.S. Attorney’s Office: he was an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of Vermont from 1994 to 2006, spending four years in the Civil Division and eight years in the Criminal Division.

Mr. Coffin graduated from Wesleyan University in 1985 and Columbia University Law School in 1989. Following graduation from law school, he served as a law clerk for Judge Albert Coffrin in the District of Vermont. He then worked as a litigation associate at Hale and Dorr in Boston. From 1991 to 1994, he was counsel to Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) on the Committee on the Judiciary, Subcommittee on Technology and the Law. At the time of his nomination for U.S. Attorney, Mr. Coffin was a Director at Paul Frank & Collins, a law firm in Burlington, Vermont from 2006 to July 2009.

Mr. Coffin is married and has three children. In his spare time, he enjoys downhill skiing during the long winter months and sailing on Lake Champlain, both of which allow him to enjoy Vermont’s natural scenic beauty.
