FRESNO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced that a federal grand jury returned an indictment today charging Rufus Leroy Robinson, 22, of Fresno, with being a felon in possession of ammunition.

The indictment alleges that in 2009, Robinson was convicted for being a felon in possession of ammunition; on November 20, 2010, he was found again in possession of ammunition in Fresno County.
“Today’s indictment demonstrates our continued effort to apprehend violent offenders and to keep our citizens and our streets safe,” stated ATF Special Agent in Charge Stephen C. Herkins. “Our expertise in firearms investigations is a valuable asset we bring to the program as we continue with our partners to fight against violent crime.”

If convicted, Robinson faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.

This case is the result of Project Safe Neighborhoods—a project designed to reduce illegal drugs and violent crimes with the particular focus of cracking down on gang activities.  Project Safe Neighborhoods brings to bear a coordinated effort between the Fresno Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office, and the United States Attorney’s Office.  Assistant United States Attorney Yasin Mohammad is prosecuting the case.

The charges are only allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
