SACRAMENTO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced that Laura L. Gregory, 28, of Sacramento, pleaded guilty today to two counts of bank fraud and one count of possession of stolen U.S. mail.
This case is the product of an extensive investigation by the United States Postal Inspection Service, with the cooperation of the Sacramento Police Department and the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office. Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Rodriguez is prosecuting the case.
According to the plea agreement, Gregory admitted that she, acting with others, staked out U.S. Postal Service customer mail boxes in Sacramento County in order to steal certain items of U.S. mail. Using information from the stolen mail, Gregory applied for credit cards and used them to purchase goods and services. On June 29, 2010, when Gregory’s Sacramento residence was searched by federal agents, she and others were in possession of more than 500 items of stolen U.S. mail in the names of more than 350 different individuals.
Gregory is scheduled to be sentenced on May 10, 2011 by United States District Judge John A. Mendez. She faces up to 30 years in prison for each bank fraud conviction and up to five years in prison for possession of stolen U.S. mail. She also faces a fine of $1 million, restitution, and federal supervised release of up to three years following any period of incarceration. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory sentencing factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.
