SACRAMENTO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced today that Timothy J. Oller, 50, of Sacramento, was sentenced yesterday by United States District Judge Kimberly J. Mueller to 21 months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, for conspiring to commit mail fraud.
Oller pleaded guilty on November 8, 2010, admitting that between 2008 and 2010 he was part of a conspiracy to defraud the State of California Employment Development Department (EDD). After receiving help from an EDD insider, Oller and others filed unemployment claims on behalf of a company for which he never worked. That company was unable to detect the fraud because it was going out of business and conducting mass-layoffs at the time. As a result of this scheme, Oller and his co-conspirators received $90,000, to which he was not entitled. He has been ordered to repay EDD the money as part of his sentence.

This case is the product of a joint investigation by the United States Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General and EDD Criminal Investigations Unit. Assistant United States Attorney Jared C. Dolan prosecuted the case.
