FRESNO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced that today a federal grand jury returned an indictment charging Jovanny Delaoruiz, 27, of Calexico, with possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute.
This case is the product of an investigation by the Fresno Sheriff's Department, the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant United States Attorney Yasin Mohammad is prosecuting the case.
According to court documents, Delaoruiz was apprehended on Interstate 5 by the Fresno Sheriff's Department and found to be in possession of over a kilogram of methamphetamine intended for distribution and approximately $32,000 in cash in plastic-wrapped bundles concealed inside his car vent.
If convicted of the drug charges, Delaoruiz faces a mandatory minimum prison term of 10 years and a maximum term of life in prison and a $4 million fine. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.
The charges are only allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
