SACRAMENTO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin Wagner announced today that San Joaquin Hospital has paid $734,096 to settle technical violations regarding personal services and lease agreements that were voluntarily disclosed to the federal government. Because of the hospital’s full cooperation, the settlement amount is based on the contractual value of the agreements and not the actual claims amount.

United States Attorney Ben Wagner encourages voluntary disclosure and cooperation with ensuring proper billings. “Health care providers have an ethical and legal duty to ensure the integrity of their dealings with federal programs. The Office of Inspector General relies on providers to detect and prevent fraudulent, abusive and wasteful activities and typically gives favorable consideration to companies that self disclose when resolving matters involving such violations.”

The settlement resulted from review and negotiations by the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California along with the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General.  Assistant U.S. Attorney Catherine Swann handled the matter for the United States.
