Docket #: 06-cr-331 EJG

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced today that David John Carli, 71, of Nevada City, pleaded guilty this morning to possession of child pornography.

This case is the product of an extensive investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Nevada City Police Department, Nevada County Sheriff's Office, the Nevada County District Attorney's Office, and the Sacramento Valley High-Tech Task Force. Assistant United States Attorneys Matthew Stegman and Michelle Prince are prosecuting the case.

According to the plea agreement, in November 2004, a Nevada City police officer obtained a search warrant for Carli's home and found numerous images of child pornography on a computer, on compact disks, and on a VHS tape. Police also found a manila file folder with several pages of handwritten notations regarding website addresses related to child pornography. This morning, Carli admitted he knowingly possessed these images.

Carli is scheduled to be sentenced by United States District Judge Edward J. Garcia on July 1, 2011. He faces a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a life term of supervised release. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.
