SACRAMENTO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced today that a federal grand jury returned a 30-count indictment charging Randall Paul Wessar, 62, of Wilton, with mail theft by a postal service employee.
The indictment alleges that Wessar, a postal carrier, stole 30 bottles of hydrocodone (also known as Vicodin) from the mail between March 2010 and April 2011. On April 28, 2011, he was arrested and made his initial appearance before United States Magistrate Judge Edmund F. Brennan. Wessar was released on bond and is scheduled for arraignment on May 29, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge Gregory G. Hollows.
This case is the product of an extensive investigation by the U.S. Postal Service - Office of the Inspector General. Assistant United States Attorney Camil A. Skipper is prosecuting the case.
The maximum statutory penalty for a violation of mail theft by a postal service employee is five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables. The court can also order restitution to any victims of the offense.
The charges are only allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
