            FRESNO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced that Rufus Leroy Robinson, 22, of Fresno, pleaded guilty today to felony possession of a stolen, loaded firearm.

            According to court records, in 2007 Robinson was convicted of felony assault with a deadly weapon. In 2009, he was convicted of being a felon in possession of ammunition. These prior felony convictions made it illegal for Robinson to possess firearms or ammunition.

            “When we deny convicted felons access to firearms and ammunition, we prevent imminent violent crime from occurring in our neighborhoods,” stated Special Agent in Charge Stephen C. Herkins. “ATF will continue to work diligently with our law enforcement partners to deny those who are prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition.”
           
            Robinson is scheduled to be sentenced by Senior United States District Judge Oliver W. Wanger on August 22, 2011. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.

            This case is the result of Project Safe Neighborhoods—a project designed to reduce illegal drugs and violent crimes with the particular focus of cracking down on gang activities. Project Safe Neighborhoods brings to bear a coordinated effort between local and federal law enforcement agencies including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives,  the Fresno Police Department, and the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Yasin Mohammad is prosecuting the case.
