FRESNO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced that yesterday United States District Judge Lawrence J. O'Neill sentenced Matthew Lee Jones, 19, of Wales, to five years in prison, to be followed by 15 years of supervised release for receiving of child pornography.

Jones has agreed to be removed from the United States to the United Kingdom at the completion of his prison sentence and to register there as a sex offender. The court also ordered the forfeiture of all items used in the commission of the offense.

This case is the result of an investigation by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Office of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Fresno working in conjunction with the Tulare County Sheriff's Office. Assistant United States Attorneys David L. Gappa and Jeremy R. Jehangiri prosecuted the case.

According to his plea agreement, Jones admitted that between August 2010 and February 2, 2011, he used a computer and Internet connection to receive images of child pornography.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood (PSC), a nationwide initiative by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by United States Attorneys' Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, PSC mobilizes federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. For more information, visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov or call the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California and ask to speak with the PSC coordinator.
