FRESNO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced that Jacob Moya, 25, of Fresno, pleaded guilty today to the crime of being a felon in possession of ammunition.

According to court records, Moya was convicted in 2010 of being a felon in possession of a firearm with an altered serial number. This prior felony made it illegal for Moya to possess firearms or ammunition.

"When we deny convicted felons access to firearms and ammunition, we prevent imminent violent crime from occurring in our neighborhoods," stated Special Agent in Charge Stephen C. Herkins. "ATF will continue to work diligently with our law enforcement partners to keep firearms and ammunition away from people who cannot legally possess them."

Moya is scheduled to be sentenced by United States District Judge Anthony W. Ishii on November 7, 2011. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.

This case is the result of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a project designed to reduce illegal drugs and violent crimes with the particular focus of cracking down on gang activities. Project Safe Neighborhoods brings to bear a coordinated effort between local and federal law enforcement agencies including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Fresno Police Department, and the Fresno County District Attorney's Office. Assistant United States Attorney Yasin Mohammad is prosecuting the case.
