SACRAMENTO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced that a federal grand jury returned a three-count indictment today charging Francisco Baptista Moreira, 38, of Stockton, with manufacturing and selling counterfeit U.S. currency.

According to the indictment, Moreira produced more than $12,000 in counterfeit currency.
This case is the product of an investigation by the U.S. Secret Service with the assistance of the Fremont and Stockton Police Departments. Assistant United States Attorney Camil A. Skipper is prosecuting the case.

If convicted, Moreira faces a maximum statutory penalty of 25 years in prison. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.

The charges are only allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
