            FRESNO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced that United States District Judge Oliver W. Wanger sentenced Kenneth Carter, 31, of Fresno, to five years and one month in prison for being a felon in possession of ammunition and violating his supervised release.

            The case was the product of an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Fresno Police Department. This case is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, a joint effort among local, state and federal law enforcement to combat gun and gang violence. Assistant United States Attorney Kimberly Sanchez prosecuted the case.

            According to court documents, on February 8, 2011, Carter was in possession of five rounds of .380-caliber ammunition. He fled from police, but was caught, and police found the ammunition in his pocket. Carter was convicted in Fresno County Superior Court in 2002 for transportation of a controlled substance, and in 2003 for forgery and being a felon in possession of a firearm. In 2007, Carter was convicted in the Eastern District of California for being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was on probation for that offense when he committed the offense for which he was sentenced today.
