Docket #: 2:11-cr-0088-KJM

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced today that Terence Alexander Jones, 38, of Fountain Valley, Calif., was sentenced today by United States District Judge Kimberly J. Mueller to 30 months in prison for mail theft.

According to court documents, Jones was arrested on November 27, 2009 after he was spotted by a CHP officer in a stolen car near Anderson in Shasta County. Inside the car were a number of opened and unopened pieces of stolen U.S. mail. After serving time for another matter in a state court, he was indicted in February 17, 2011 by a Federal grand jury for possessing stolen mail. He pleaded guilty to the charge on July 7, 2011.

At sentencing, Judge Mueller said that the 30-month sentence was justified because he was a recidivist mail thief with a significant criminal record.

This case is the product of an extensive investigation by the United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General. Assistant United States Attorney Samantha S. Spangler prosecuted the case.
