            FRESNO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced that a federal grand jury returned an indictment today charging Adan Gonzalez-Gonzalez, 23, of Fresno, with federal firearms and immigration offenses.

            This case is the product of an investigation by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Fresno Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Kimberly Sanchez is prosecuting the case.

            According to the indictment, on October 10, 2011, Gonzalez-Gonzalez was in possession of .22-caliber ammunition while being an illegal alien and after having been convicted of felonies. He was convicted in 2006 for vehicle theft and burglary, and in 2007 for receiving stolen property.

            If convicted of the current charges, Gonzalez-Gonzalez faces a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each charge. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.

            The charges are only allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
