      FRESNO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced that a federal grand jury returned an indictment today charging Julian Gomez Sosa, 42, of Fresno, with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

            According to the indictment, on September 11, 2011, Sosa was found to be in possession of a firearm. He had been convicted in 1993 of vehicle theft and receiving stolen property, and in 2003, he was convicted for narcotics possession.

            If convicted, Sosa faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.
                                   
            This case is the result of Project Safe Neighborhoods—a project designed to reduce illegal drugs and violent crimes with the particular focus of cracking down on gang activities. Project Safe Neighborhoods brings to bear a coordinated effort between local and federal law enforcement agencies including the Fresno Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California, and the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Yasin Mohammad is prosecuting the case.

            The charges are only allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
