SACRAMENTO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced that Polly Ann Conner Bautista, 54, of Sacramento, pleaded guilty today to four counts of bank fraud and a single count of possession of stolen U.S. mail.

This case is the product of an investigation by the United States Postal Inspection Service with the cooperation of the Sacramento Police Department and the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office. Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Rodriguez is prosecuting the case.

According to the plea agreement, in 2008, Bautista took over the identity of postal customers that she found in stolen U.S. mail that she had obtained. She used the false identities to obtain money, goods, and services by fraud. In the fall and winter of 2008, Bautista posed as another to negotiate stolen checks with associated stolen identification information at numerous Sacramento County banks and merchants. On December 12, 2008, when her Sacramento residence was searched, law enforcement found a cache of stolen financial instruments (checks, credit card account numbers, and personal identification information of victims) in addition to stolen U.S. mail belonging to further victims.

Bautista is scheduled to be sentenced on January 26, 2012 by United States District Court Judge Kimberly J. Mueller. Bautista faces up to 30 years for each count of bank fraud, up to five years for possession of stolen mail, and $1 million in restitution. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory sentencing factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.
