SACRAMENTO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced today that Muntu Lavar Williams, 39, of Richmond, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Morrison C. England to five years and 10 months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release for credit card fraud.
According to court documents, in August and September of 2010, Williams and co-defendant Michael Jerome Tucker used stolen credit card account information to fraudulently purchase Target gift cards. They concealed their conduct by encoding the stolen account information onto nondescript Visa gift cards before making a purchase. Because there was no name on the Visa gift card, the store’s policy was not to ask for identification. In this way, Williams and Tucker stole more than $80,000 at Target stores throughout the Sacramento region. When law enforcement executed a search warrant at Williams’ residence in Richmond, they found approximately 2,000 credit card numbers in raw form and a boxed e-card embosser used to affix numbers and make additional credit cards.
Tucker was sentenced on October 13, 2011 to 18 months in prison.
This case was the product of an investigation by the United States Secret Service and the Davis Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Jared C. Dolan prosecuted the case.
