FRESNO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced that John Vang, 30, and Xiong Vang, aka Blong Vang, aka Cheng Vang, 24, both of Fresno, pleaded guilty today to conspiring to commit postal crimes.

According to his plea agreement, Xiong Vang conspired to possess counterfeit postal keys. Co-conspirator John Vang admitted to conspiring to possess postal locks and counterfeit postal keys. John Vang also admitted to conspiring to possess stolen mail from over 250 victims.  In addition, John Vang admitted to his leadership role in the conspiracy and that he and his co-conspirators altered checks stolen from the mail by removing the original payee’s name from the check in order to defraud individuals or financial institutions of money or property.

This case is the product of an extensive investigation by United States Postal Inspection Service. Assistant United States Attorney Grant B. Rabenn is prosecuting the case.

The defendants are scheduled to be sentenced by Chief United States District Judge Anthony W. Ishii on May 7, 2012. The maximum statutory penalty for conspiracy is five years and a $250,000 fine. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.
