SACRAMENTO, Calif.-- United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced today that Polly Ann Conner Bautista, 55, of Sacramento, California, was sentenced this morning by United States District Court Judge Kimberly J. Mueller to 18 months in prison for four counts of Bank Fraud and a single count of Possession of Stolen U.S. Mail
In late 2008, Bautista obtained stolen U.S. Mail and property and thereafter took over the identity of postal customers and robbery victims to obtain money, goods, and services by fraud. Specifically, in the fall and winter of 2008, she posed as mail theft and later robbery victims to negotiate stolen checks with associated stolen identification information at numerous Sacramento County banks and merchants. On December 12, 2008, when Bautista's Sacramento residence was searched, law enforcement uncovered Bautista's cache of stolen financial instruments (checks, credit card account numbers, and personal identification information of over 18 victims) in addition to stolen U.S. Mail belonging to further victims.
Bautista was on California State probation for similar identity theft conduct at the time of her federal offenses. In addition to the prison term, Bautista was ordered to pay restitution and a special assessment of $500.00 to a victim witness fund.
This case is the product of extensive investigation by the United States Postal Inspection Service, with the cooperation of the Sacramento Police Department and the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Rodriguez.
