FRESNO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced today that Alejandro Ortiz-Hernandez (aka Ernesto Colorado-Herrera), 30, Lauro Perez-Perez, 25, Maria del Pilar Perez-Perez, 23, and Ruben Perez-Perez, 25, all of Mexico, pleaded guilty before United States District Judge Lawrence J. O’Neill to trafficking in counterfeit labels, specifically counterfeit movie DVDs and music CDs.
According to plea agreements, in October 2011, Alejandro Ortiz-Hernandez and siblings Lauro Perez-Perez, Maria del Pilar Perez-Perez, and Ruben Perez-Perez trafficked in and sold counterfeit movie DVDs and music CDs exhibiting counterfeit labels and packaging in Fresno County. In connection with the cases, approximately 10,000 counterfeit movie DVDs and music CDs were seized, as well as various multi-drive DVD burners, hundreds of blank DVDs and CDs, and label and packaging material.
These cases are the product of an extensive investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Assistant U.S. Attorney Ian Garriques is prosecuting the cases.
The defendants are scheduled to be sentenced on May 21, 2012, at 9 a.m., by Judge O’Neill. The maximum statutory penalty each defendant faces is 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.
