Docket #: 2: 12-cr-088-EFB

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced that Denis Tyannikov, 25, of Sacramento, pleaded guilty on Monday, March 19, 2012 to misdemeanor embezzlement of money entrusted to him in his counter clerk position at the Rio Linda U.S. Post Office.

This case is the product of an investigation by the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General. Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Rodriguez is prosecuting the case.

According to court documents, between October 1, 2009 and September 1, 2011, Tyannikov took $11,282 from the Rio Linda Post Office where he worked as a counter clerk. He stole small amounts from the post office's cash reserve and from his daily merchandise sales and falsely reported postal stamp sales and refunds. Tyannikov was arrested in North Dakota by U.S. Marshals and local authorities on December 9, 2011.

Tyannikov is scheduled to be sentenced on June 25, 2012 by U.S. Magistrate Judge Edmund F. Brennan. Tyannikov faces a maximum sentence of one year in prison, a $100,000 fine, and an order of restitution. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory sentencing factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.
