FRESNO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced that New Kee Xiong, 30, of Fresno, pleaded guilty today to participating in a conspiracy to commit postal crimes. Xiong was taken into federal custody following his guilty plea.

According to the plea agreement, Xiong conspired with two other individuals to steal U.S. mail from cluster box mail units in the Fresno area. Xiong also admitted to conspiring to possess counterfeit postal keys and to possess stolen U.S. mail from over 50 victims. In addition, Xiong admitted to opening a bank account at the Educational Employee Credit Union and depositing at least $21,623 in fraudulent checks into that account.

This case is the product of an extensive investigation by United States Postal Inspection Service and the Fresno Police Department Financial Crimes Unit. Assistant United States Attorney Grant B. Rabenn is prosecuting the case.

Xiong is scheduled to be sentenced by Chief United States District Judge Anthony W. Ishii on June 25, 2012. The maximum statutory penalty for conspiracy is five years and a $250,000 fine. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.
