SACRAMENTO, Calif. — United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced that Yasir Mehmood, 41, of Sacramento, California, was indicted today by a federal grand jury for multiple counts of bank fraud, submitting false documents to an agency of the United States, obtaining U.S. Mail by fraud, aggravated identity theft, and credit card fraud.
This case was the product of extensive investigation by the U. S. Postal Inspection Service. Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Rodriguez is prosecuting this case.
Mehmood is alleged to have submitted, in the names of numerous victims, false U.S. Mail forwarding forms to obtain U.S. Mail by fraud. With the contents of the misdirected U.S. Mail and other unlawfully obtained victim identification and financial information, Mehmood is alleged to have committed numerous acts of bank fraud and credit card fraud. Mehmood is also charged with posing as a victim on multiple occasions and with purchasing and obtaining by fraud, among other things, car parts, debit cards, and more than a dozen iPads and iPhones.
Mehmood was arrested on April 9, 2012 at his Sacramento apartment by inspectors of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. On April 10, 2012, Mehmood made his initial appearance on a related complaint before United States Magistrate Judge Gregory G. Hollows. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 30 years in prison per bank fraud charge, 15 years for credit card fraud, 5 years for obtaining U.S. Mail by fraud and submitting false documents to an agency of the United States, and 2 years consecutive for the aggravated identity theft offense.
Mehmood's next court appearance is scheduled for April 24, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. The United States Attorney's Office noted that the charges are only accusations, and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
