FRESNO, Calif. — Evodio Moreno, 51, of Huron, pleaded guilty today to one count of mail fraud, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.

According to the plea agreement, Moreno defrauded the Internal Revenue Service by filing tax returns in the names of deceased individuals. As a result of this scheme, Moreno fraudulently obtained more than $48,000 from the IRS between 2002 and 2004.

This case is the product of an investigation by the IRS Criminal Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Mark J. McKeon is prosecuting the case.

Moreno is scheduled to be sentenced by Chief United States District Judge Anthony W. Ishii on August 27, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. The maximum statutory penalty for mail fraud is 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.
