Thursday, August 22, 2013

Docket #: 2:13-cr-273 MCE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Samuel Thompson, 28, of Chico, was arrested today in Sacramento, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced. On August 14, 2013, a federal grand jury returned a one-count indictment charging him with receiving images of child pornography. The indictment was unsealed today after his arrest.

According to the indictment, between August 8, 2012, and March 7, 2013, Thompson received images of child pornography. He will be arraigned today at 2:00 p.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge Dale A. Drozd.

This case is the product of an investigation by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Assistant United States Attorney Matthew G. Morris is prosecuting the case.

If convicted, Thompson faces a statutory penalty of five to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Any sentence, however, would be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables. The charges are only allegations; the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
