FUGITIVE SEX OFFENDER SENTENCED TO ADDITIONAL 18 MONTHS OF IMPRISONMENT FOR FALSE PASSPORT

SAN FRANCISCO - United States Attorney Joseph P. Russoniello and Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) Special Agent In-Charge Patrick Durkin announced that Bryan Mitchell Jones was sentenced recently to 18 months in prison and three years of supervised release.

Mr. Jones pleaded guilty on August 19, 2008, to False Statement in Application for a United States Passport, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1542. According to the plea agreement and various court records and proceedings, Mr. Jones admitted that in December of 2000, he applied for a United States passport in San Francisco using the false name of a deceased man.

Court records also revealed that Mr. Jones fled sexual abuse charges in the State of Oregon and lived in San Francisco under the alias of the deceased man from 1994 through 2000. In 2000, Mr. Jones applied for and obtained the false passport at issue and then moved to the Philippines. Lastly, court records show that Mr. Jones was captured in the Philippines and was returned to Oregon where he was sentenced to over eight years of imprisonment for his sexual abuse charges.

This sentence of 18 months for passport fraud was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge William H. Alsup, and will be served consecutively to the eight-year sentence Mr. Jones received in Oregon for sexual abuse.

Erika Frick is the Assistant U.S. Attorney who prosecuted the case. The prosecution was the result of an investigation by the Diplomatic Security Service.

Anyone with information about false or fraudulently issued passports or visas is encouraged to contact DSS at (415) 705-1176.
