MOBILE COUNTERFEITER SENTENCED TO 30 MONTHS

Paul Rickett Manufactured More Than $30,000 In Counterfeit U.S. Currency

SAN FRANCISCO - Paul Rickett was sentenced to 30 months in prison yesterday for producing, dealing and attempting to pass as genuine more than $30,000 in counterfeit U.S. currency from November 2008 through May 2009, United States Attorney Joseph P. Russoniello announced.

Rickett pleaded guilty on July 14 to one count of dealing in counterfeit obligations of the United States, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 473. Rickett admitted to producing counterfeit money and attempting to pass that money off as genuine.

In March 2009, the U.S. Secret Service learned from an investigation in San Jose, Calif., that a man in the Bay Area was manufacturing counterfeit money out of his van. That man turned out to be Rickett.

The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge William H. Alsup. Judge Alsup also sentenced the defendant to a three-year period of supervised release.

Brian C. Lewis is the Assistant U.S. Attorney who is prosecuting the case with the assistance of Rawaty Yim and Jenelle Balonon. The prosecution is the result of a two-month investigation by the U.S. Secret Service.
