HARTFORD MAN WHO MADE FALSE STATEMENTS TO THE FBI IS SENTENCED

Kevin J. O’Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that JUSTIN SINGLETON, age 22, of School Street, Hartford, was sentenced today by Senior United States District Judge Peter C. Dorsey in New Haven to three years of probation for making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. SINGLETON pleaded guilty to the offense on October 30, 2006.

According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in court, in August 2005, the FBI was investigating SINGLETON’s possible involvement in terrorist fund raising, pursuing “jihad” against the United States, and making threats to harm and kill United States troops overseas. In furtherance of the investigation, the FBI interviewed SINGLETON, who made false statements about the amount of money he expected to obtain from a certain contributor (an individual identified as “Khalid”) as well as whether he had discussions with Khalid in regard to explosives. SINGLETON had, in fact, been in email communication with an individual posing as a terrorist and, at the time of the interview, the FBI had copies of SINGLETON’s emails. The emails revealed that SINGLETON had discussed obtaining and distributing explosives to persons involved in “jihad.”

Judge Dorsey ordered SINGLETON to abide by several special conditions of his probation, including that he continue to receive mental health counseling and take prescribed medication, that he have no use of the internet, and that he submit to random searches of his residence by the United States Probation Office.

This case has been investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys David Ring and Mark Rubino.
