NEW BRITAIN MAN SENTENCED TO FEDERAL PRISON FOR FAILING TO PAY MORE THAN $68,000 IN CHILD SUPPORT

Nora R. Dannehy, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that EDWIN RICARDO MEJIA, 30, of New Britain, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Christopher F. Droney in Hartford to four months of imprisonment, followed by one year of supervised release, for failing to pay more than $68,000 in child support.  On October 8, 2008, MEJIA pleaded guilty to one count of failure to pay a legal child support obligation.

According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in court, between January 8, 2001, and February 26, 2008, MEJIA failed to pay a child support obligation ordered by the State of Connecticut, Judicial District of Stamford at Norwalk on January 8, 2001.  The past due child support for his minor child is $68,497.95.

Today, Judge Droney ordered MEJIA to pay the total amount of the past due child support he owes at a rate of $100 per month.

This matter was investigated by agents of the United States Department of Health and Human Services with the assistance of the State of Connecticut, Office of Child Support Enforcement Services in Stamford.  The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Deborah R. Slater.
