NEW HAVEN MAN SENTENCED TO 33 MONTHS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR ROLE IN PCP DISTRIBUTION OPERATION

Nora R. Dannehy, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that ALEXANDER GARRETT, also known as “Africa,” 39, of Derby Street, New Haven, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Christopher F. Droney in Hartford to 33 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release.  On November 4, 2008, GARRETT pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to distribute phencyclidine (“PCP”).

On March 26, 2008, a federal grand jury returned an Indictment charging GARRETT and seven other individuals with various narcotics offenses related to the distribution of PCP in New Haven and the surrounding area.  The Indictment stemmed from a wiretap investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s New Haven Safe Streets Task Force.

According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in court, on several occasions in February and March 2008, GARRETT was intercepted over the wiretap engaging in conversations related to PCP distribution with co-defendants Anthony Washington and Maurice Armond.  The investigation revealed that GARRETT sold PCP for both Washington and Armond.

GARRETT was on state probation at the time of this offense and has been detained in federal custody since his federal arrest on March 14, 2008.

Washington and Armond each pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to distribute 100 grams or more of phencyclidine.  On January 20, 2009, Washington was sentenced to 120 months of imprisonment and, on October 1, 2008, Armond was sentenced to 110 months of imprisonment.

This matter was investigated by the FBI New Haven Safe Streets Task Force, which is composed of representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the New Haven Police Department, the Ansonia Police Department, the Milford Police Department, the Hamden Police Department, the East Haven Police Department, the Connecticut State Police and the Connecticut Department of Correction.  This matter is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Robert M. Spector.
