FORMER U.S. POSTAL SERVICE EMPLOYEE WHO STOLE MAIL IS SENTENCED

Nora R. Dannehy, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that JORGE COLON, 54, of Waterbury, was sentenced yesterday, June 15, by United States District Judge Janet C. Hall in Bridgeport to three years of probation and six months home confinement. On March 26, 2009, COLON pleaded guilty to one count of theft of mail matter by a postal employee.

According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in court, COLON was employed by the United States Postal Service as a senior mail carrier in Newtown, Connecticut.  From October 15, 2008 to November 17, 2008, a video camera was installed in COLON’s postal delivery vehicle.  The video surveillance revealed COLON examining and opening a number of pieces of mail that did not belong to him.  When he pleaded guilty, COLON admitted that, on November 17, 2008, he opened a letter and removed its contents, which included a greeting card and a Target gift card.

This matter was investigated by the United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General and the Newtown Police Department.  This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sarah P. Karwan.
