Project Safe Neighborhoods: BRIDGEPORT MAN SENTENCED TO 52 MONTHS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR POSSESSING A FIREARM AND AMMUNITION

Nora R. Dannehy, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that WAYNE MYERS, 41, formerly of Central Avenue, Bridgeport, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Christopher F. Droney in Hartford to 52 months of imprisonment, followed by two years of supervised release.  On March 9, 2009, MYERS pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a previously convicted felon.
According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in court, on or about December 29, 2007, in Bridgeport, MYERS, knowingly possessed a Beretta USA Corp, Model 92FS, 9mm pistol, five rounds of Federal 9mm ammunition, and 10 rounds of COR-BON 9mm ammunition, all of which had been manufactured outside of Connecticut.
Prior to December 29, 2007, MYERS had been convicted of seven felony offenses.  It is a violation of federal law for a person previously convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm or ammunition that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce.
MYERS currently is incarcerated in federal custody.
This case was investigated by the ATF Task Force and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Felice Duffy as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative.
The Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative is aimed at reducing gang and gun violence, deterring illegal possession of guns, and improving the safety of residents in Connecticut’s cities.  Participants in the initiative include community members and organizations as well as federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
