DANBURY RESIDENT SENTENCED TO FEDERAL PRISON FOR ILLEGALLY SELLING HANDGUNS Nora R. Dannehy, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that WILLIAM NUNEZ, 42, of Washington Avenue, Danbury, was sentenced today by Senior United States District Judge Peter C. Dorsey in New Haven to 12 months and one day of imprisonment, followed by two years of supervised release, for unlawfully engaging in the business of dealing in firearms. NUNEZ pleaded guilty to the offense on April 7, 2009. According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in Court, between September 2008 and February 2009, NUNEZ sold a total of four handguns to undercover law enforcement officers and an individual working with law enforcement. One of the firearms had been reported stolen. On February 27, 2009, law enforcement officers conducted a search of NUNEZ’s residence and located an addition handgun, which also had been reported stolen. NUNEZ has never applied for, nor been granted, a federal firearms license, which would permit him to lawfully sell or transfer firearms. NUNEZ is a citizen of the Dominican Republic and a lawful permanent resident of the United States. He faces deportation proceedings following service of his federal prison term. This matter was investigated by the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Danbury Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sarah P. Karwan. | |
