Project Safe Neighborhoods: STAMFORD MAN ADMITS UNLAWFUL POSSESSION OF STREET SWEEPER SHOTGUN

Dannehy, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that ANDRES CORREA, 22, of Custer Street, Stamford, pleaded guilty today before United States District Judge Vanessa L. Bryant in Hartford to one count of possession of a Street Sweeper shotgun that was not registered to him.

According to court documents and statements made in court, on January 14, 2009, officers with the Stamford Police Department Property Crimes Unit went to 104 Custer Street in Stamford to arrest CORREA for theft related offenses.  After CORREA consented to a search of his bedroom, officers seized a black Street Sweeper 12 gauge revolving cylinder shotgun.  Subsequent analysis revealed the bore of the barrel of the firearm to be more than one-half inch in width, which defines the weapon as a destructive device and requires it to be registered with the federal government.  However, the firearm was not registered to CORREA on the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.

Judge Bryant has scheduled sentencing for January 12, 2010, at which time CORREA faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years and a fine of up to $250,000.

CORREA has been detained since his arrest on January 14, 2009.

This case was investigated by the Stamford Police Department, the Connecticut State Police, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, pursuant to the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative.  The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael E. Runowicz.

The Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative is aimed at reducing gun and gang violence, deterring illegal possession of guns, and improving the safety of residents in Connecticut’s cities.  Participants in the initiative include community members and organizations as well as federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
