FORMER MERIDEN MAN INDICTED FOR ESCAPING FROM HARTFORD HALFWAY HOUSE

Nora R. Dannehy, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that a federal grand jury sitting in Hartford has returned an indictment charging JEFFREY WEINHOLD, 33, formerly of Meriden, with escape from the custody of the Attorney General.  The Indictment was returned yesterday, October 27.

The indictment alleges that, on October 30, 2008, WEINHOLD escaped from custody at Cheney House Residential Reentry Center in Hartford.

WEINHOLD had been confined to Cheney House RRC to complete his term of incarceration after being convicted in 2005 in United States District Court of interstate transportation of stolen vehicles and money laundering.

If convicted, WEINHOLD faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five years and a fine of up to $250,000.

WEINHOLD was arrested in Florida on August 6, 2009, and is currently detained.

U.S. Attorney Dannehy stressed that an indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt.  The defendant is entitled to a fair trial at which it is the Government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

This case is being investigated by the United States Marshals Service and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan S. Freimann.
