WALLINGFORD MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO FEDERAL TAX FRAUD CHARGE David B. Fein, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that GARY ABOLAFIA, 64, of Nod Brook Road, Wallingford, waived his right to indictment and pleaded guilty today before Senior United States District Judge Ellen Bree Burns in New Haven to one count of filing a false federal income tax return. According to court documents and statements made in court, when ABOLAFIA filed his 2004 federal income tax return, he claimed his taxable income was $92,060. However, investigation by the Internal Revenue Service determined that ABOLAFIA had actually earned $163,500. In pleading guilty, ABOLAFIA also admitted that he underreported his 2003 income, and did not file his 2005 tax return. ABOLAFIA’s total tax liability for the 2003, 2004 and 2005 tax years is $82,998. Judge Burns has scheduled sentencing for January 28, 2011, at which time ABOLAFIA faces a maximum term of imprisonment of three years and a fine of up to $100,000. ABOLAFIA also has agreed to pay restitution in the amount of $82,988 to the Internal Revenue Service. The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Calvin B. Kurimai. | |
