Nuisance Property Abatement Success Story

El Salvadoreano
3548 14th Street NW
(PSA 302)(Ward 1)

El Salvadoreano, a bar located at 3548 14th Street, N.W., drew numerous hispanic gang members to its location. In 2003 and 2004 several violent attacks occurred in and around the establishment. The Community Prosecution Nuisance Abatement Team began to gather information on arrests in and around the area. The Community Prosecutor then contacted the Director of Alcohol Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA), informing her of the incidents and requesting that she conduct an investigation. ABRA’s investigation revealed numerous violations at the establishment. The Community Prosecution team then gathered additional information and forwarded it to the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) who prosecuted the case. In December, 2004, the ABC Board suspended El Salvadoreano's alcohol license for five days, fined it $2000 and required a written security plan to be submitted. Community Prosecution team members and attorneys from OAG met with the property owners to inform them about the past problems and encourage them to become active in the continued monitoring of the establishment, whose owners had leased the property. A Metropolitan Police Officer with the gang unit informed the local community prosecutor that the area is now much quieter and the violence has ceased. This is a good example of the USAO Community Prosecution team working with MPD, OAG and ABRA to address problems in the community.
