Benjamin Friedman , Acting Chief
The Major Crimes Section is responsible for prosecuting some
of the most serious violent offenders in the District of Columbia,
other than those charged with homicide or sexual assault offenses.
The Section is staffed with experienced prosecutors who are
divided into seven geographic districts, which correspond
to the Metropolitan Police Department districts 1 through
7, to maximize the benefit of gathering and utilizing criminal
intelligence about a particular area or offender. The vast
majority of cases prosecuted by the Major Crimes Section are
cases in which the defendants are held without bond pending
trial because of the danger the defendants pose to the community.
These cases generally must be investigated and indicted within
90 days and brought to trial within 100 days.
